Another Dream, and Another with Tomorrow
2024
Showa Sheet Glass was a distinctive type of glass produced in Japan from the 1950s through the 1980s, a period of remarkable economic growth following the post-World War II reconstruction. Offering privacy and unique pattern designs, this type of glass was widely used in architecture and interior design. In this series of works, I transfer the iconic Showa Sheet Glass patterns onto semi-transparent paper using cyanotype printing. The prints are then overlaid with found Japanese family archive photographs from the same period. Through this approach of layering, I simulate the visual experiences of peering into domestic spaces from the outside, as if observing the lives within through the Showa glass window. Meanwhile, I explore the relationship between material and memory, reflecting on the idea and aspiration of “the dream home” and the belief that "hard work builds a fulfilling life" embedded within the national psyche of this particular time period.
The work was made during the summer residency at Studio Kura in 2024.
